YOUR HOSTESS + LEAD INSTRUCTOR
I have been in love with Swing music since I was little.
It was my grandma & the Andrew Sisters that hooked me. The dancing part came later. They both are an integral part of my life now. I have been passionate about dancing for over 20 years now.
Swing Dancing makes me feel so alive and so free...
Who wouldn't want to share that feeling with others?

Drop-in lessons

Purpose:
Drop-in lessons are meant to provide you a lot of bang for your buck.
They are intended to be welcoming so that new or accomplished dancers find value. But also to get you dancing right away!

What material is taught:
Drop-in lessons begin with a basic step or an all-levels step. Some lessons take concept and develop it by providing more more vocabulary

-
Basic: 6-count
-
Developed: tuck turn & inside turn

Or

Drop-in lessons can start with a basic and embellish it with variations, changing rhythms, positions, or shapes.
-
Basic: Charleston
-
Embellished: syncopated basic,, & freeze

Other drop-in lessons provide an array of steps
so that a beginner dancer can dance a variety moves at the same level of difficulty.

You will also find that these classes do not dive too deeply into technique.

Kinds of dances taught:
All the dances can be taught. Subject matter can be widely varied in a drop-in class from week to week or month to month. Or in some cases remain the same content. These are primer classes and student are encouraged to continue their training in series classes. The benefit with variety is a dancer can acquire a wide array of basic steps to learn and dance over time.
Who Teaches Drop-in Lessons:
All level of teachers teach drop-in classes. Many new teachers gain a tremendous amount of insight while teaching this level of class. Advanced teachers may approach the same class with a different perspective each time.
Teachers might also vary depending on the organizations structure.
In attending a number of drop-in lessons you might find that one persons's teaching style matches closely with your learning style. inquiring about that instructor's schedule and following them might afford you more chances to learn from them.

Frequency of Drop-in Lessons:
That depends entirely on the organization. Some clubs or businesses have a monthly dance, some host weekly. Some may have a more intense schedule. Make sure you check the calendar.

Cost of Drop-in Lessons:
You will find that Drop in lessons are included in the price of admission! This is a great opportunity to dip your toe in and test out Swing Dancing. You will find many others doing the same in these classes.
Series classes

Purpose:
Series classes provide a body of material fitting under a particular topic at the same level. Classes can also include technique. These classes are intended to develop skills. The value is in the content. But the benefits are a result of your own effort, in class and practice afterwards.

What material is taught:
Series classes are number of classes dedicated to a subject. Like drop-in classes, they begin with a subject and explore additional vocabulary, an array/vocabulary class. These classes will often do both, develop a basic and embellish moves.
A series class can be progressive, where a class will start with a foundation and increase in difficulty. Progressive classes means that each subsequent class builds on the material of the last. So this class might look a tuck turn and provide a variety of dance choices for that step (footwork, shape, connection). Another time a class is progressive is when it covers choreography.

Kinds of dances taught:
All the dances can be taught as series classes. Subject matter can be widely varied series to series. There are no particular seasons for dances. So there is no rhyme or reason to the order of material except for the interest of the students. These class formats are for those interested in progressing in a particular subject area. You will find a lot more personal attention in series classes as attendance is smaller. Delivery of material may change. The focus shifts from generally accomplishing a task to accuracy. Teachers' goal is to bring students closer to expert.
Who Teaches Drop-in Lessons:
All levels of teachers teach series classes. However, new dance teachers are often mentored in this environment. Generally, a series is taught by the same instructor/set of instructors. Series classes are a great way to get to know a teacher's ideology, teaching style, and in-depth knowledge of the subject matter. It is important here to make sure the teacher is informed of your learning needs. It is also important to note that these classes often require outside work. You will need to practice outside of class to see appreciable change in your mechanics. As with all skills there is a direct correlation between amount of practice and success.

Frequency of Drop-in Lessons:
That depends entirely on the organization. Generally series classes have the same length, 4, 6, 8 weeks, Some topics require less time. Some have a series class and time in between to market. Some schedule series back to back.

Cost of Drop-in Lessons:
This varies widely. Some factors include the experience of the teacher, the local economy, how many classes are in a series, rental of hall or equipment.
